Action Alert – Sullivans Division Sea Cadet Newsletter – April 2017

From The Desk Of The CO

April Showers…

It is with a heavy heart that I have to announce the passing of Col. Patrick Cunningham. He always supported the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps at the Buffalo Naval Park. The Col. has been the Executive Director for the Naval Park for a very long time and he has implemented various programs and encampments for both the Sea Cadets and Boy Scouts.

We will miss him dearly and wish him fair winds and following seas.

Stand easy sir, we have the Watch.

We will be having a parent meeting for any parents that want to voice their opinions or have any questions or concerns about the unit. We do this on annual basis and appreciate your input. So please join us after muster on Saturday.

We will be moving back to the ships on Sunday, so be ready to pitch in and help. Saturday we will be doing our mile run to finish up our PRT for summer training’s.

I would like to say Bravo Zulu to those Cadets performance at the Shrine Circus; you again received very high praise from all the Shriners and we even seemed to spur a little interest in the cadet corps from the crowd!!!  Also those of you that were at the ceremony for the Naval Park–very well done!!

I thank you all for volunteering for these events.  You made us proud.

We also have some good things coming up, such as training with the Coast Guard starting in MAY!!!

The Fraternal Order of the Eagles is coming up once again on 03JUNE2017; this is always a good time!!!

Training’s are already being posted on the Homeport website and I hope you have been keeping your eyes open, as some training’s fill up very quickly.

Action Alert – Sullivans Division Sea Cadet Newsletter – March 2017

From The Desk Of The CO

MARCH in like a Lion…

I would like to congratulate everyone for a job well done on our annual inspection. Sea cadets scored 3.5 out of 4.0 and the League Cadets scored 3.5 out of 4.0.

BRAVO ZULU!!!

Keep Pushing and Never Quit!

We have just completed our annual Winter Survival Training and well we did not have the optimal conditions to do all the Shelter building, we did venture out numerous times to preform various Operations and put classroom lectures to the test. We learned about various things including Land Navigation, Field Medical techniques, Combat formation structure and movement. We had a very good time and everyone learned a lot.

With March coming very soon, we need to prepare for our busy Color Guard season; our first event is for the Shriner’s Circus.

We need 5 cadets for a Color Guard Detail and 5 Cadets to do a security detail. Those cadets who perform the Color Guard are welcome to join with the security detail cadets for the remainder of the show. First show is on Saturday 18March 2017; report time is 1630 at the Hamburg Fairgrounds. (Color Guard cadets will come dressed in Dress Blues, Security Detail cadets will come dressed in Jeans and a Unit or Sea Cadet Shirt to be easily identified). Second show is on Sunday 19March2017; report time is 1200 at the Hamburg Fairgrounds. If you are interested in either of these events please contact LT J. Pawli at jpawli@msn.com.

Training season is coming up very quickly and I hope everyone has turned in all their coursework in order to get your promotions after your summer trainings. Remember to plan ahead for what you want; do not wait until the last minute. Make your plans now!!!

The Sullivans Division – “We Stick Together”

From The Desk Of The Training Officer

Greetings from winter survival training. We are here in Genesee County Park. As I sit here writing, we are huddled in an igloo your shipmates built, and the temperature is about 15 degrees. This is advance training at its best. Actually this is a little exaggerated. It is 52 degrees and sunny. No igloo, no snow. It is advance training and your shipmates are learning valuable information about survival skills, and combat strategies. If you have never been to this training, it’s certainly one to keep in mind for next year.  Everyone should be keeping track of what training’s they need for advancements. Advancements should be one of the reasons you are attached to this unit. It is also an item on our inspection, so we need to see you advancing. In order to advance in rank you need advance training’s, book work, time in grade and time in service,  Additionally, for petty officers, you need positions staffing.

I trust every cadet will have some kind of coursework to hand in at this upcoming drill. I know you all are busy and involved with other things, but take a few minutes to an hour each day and you’ll finish a book. There’s no reason you can’t get ahead on your book work. If you think you are ready for testing, get a chit in right away. Put in some study time for this, so you can pass the first time out.

If you think you are missing any awards or ribbons, get a chit in right away. You all should know where to find the ribbon checker at homeport. Remember you can receive awards and ribbons for things outside of cadets; academic achievement awards for performing in school, community service for helping and being a good citizen in the community. I’m sure most of you need to perform community service for school. I know colleges want to see you involved in the community as well. Finally let’s spread the word and get a recruiting award and grow this unit. You are the best way to get people here.

Have a plan!! We talked a lot about that this week at survival training. It applies to every part of your life. What is your plan for this program? What is your plan for advance training this summer? What is your plan for college? What is your plan for life in general? If you wait till the last minute, your options WILL BE limited…

so, PLAN!

Action Alert – Sullivans Division Sea Cadet Newsletter – February 2017

From The Desk Of The CO

Once again our Annual Inspection is upon us.

I know everyone has been working very hard on their uniforms and that showed at last drill. All we needed was some minor fixes and some more polish on the shoes. I know you will all be there bright eyed and bushy tailed looking your best. LCDR Adams will be joining us for our inspection; for those newer cadets, LCDR Adams is our Regional Director.

Winter Training is coming up very quickly and those who have signed up; if you haven’t paid or turned in your orders FEB drill is your last chance to do so. Those of you that are planning classes for either during a drill or winter training do not forget to pass it up the chain for approval.

We will have all cadet billet letters available on Sunday of FEB drill so if you want anything that is offered you need to speak up. Remember you have to be at least a PO3 to earn your right to pick a billet SN and lower will randomly be placed in any unfilled billets for a minimum of three months.

Action Alert – Sullivans Division Sea Cadet Newsletter – January 2017

From The Desk Of The CO

I want to first say, I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and we are looking forward to a very Good New Year. I would like to say Bravo Zulu to all those that received awards at our Annual Banquet. Remember to keep pushing and striving for excellence.

January Drill is going to be a formal Dress Inspection; so come prepared! Soak those Dixie Cups, Shine those Shoes and Iron those Uniforms. I expect everyone to be looking very sharp and squared away. Please remember that our tentative date for our Annual Inspection is set for February 2017.

Our Annual Winter Survival Training is coming up in February too; Sign up now if you are interested and want to learn a thing or two. This training is restricted to the first 20 cadets to sign up and sadly this is only open to Sea Cadets, not league cadets. The dates are 17FEB2017 – 21FEB2017 held at Genesee County Park and Forest in E. Bethany, NY

To All Officers & Auxiliary members; please remember to complete your Darkness to Light class; seeing as this is a mandatory requirement for all and must be completed before February Drill.

Remember to keep turning in that coursework, keep moving and be active. Before you know it, our Bi-Annual PRT will be right around the corner again.

08 Jan 2017 USCG Master Chief Martin will be joining us to see what everyone is interested in and assess what the Coast Guard can do for us in the upcoming months ahead.

I hope I can get some others to join me in the sit-up challenge put forth by LTJG L. Fronk; I owe him 71 sit-ups. Let’s show him what our Motto is & stands for…

Keep turning in the coursework, summer trainings are just around the corner.  For all of you recruits: you must complete the BMR to attend Boot Camp.

League Cadet Information

Cadets, I’m very proud of all of you for staying on top of your coursework and testing opportunities.  We had quite a few cadets test in December, and will be seeing some advancements this month as a result.  You all are a great example of “you get out of something, what you put into it.”

Also, Bravo Zulu to all the cadets who received awards at the Christmas Banquet.  Keep up the good work!

Action Alert – Sullivans Division Sea Cadet Newsletter – October 2016

From The Desk Of The CO

LAST OVERNIGHT ABOARD THE SHIPS

October is our last overnight aboard the ships and we will be berthing on the USS The Sullivans this drill. Come prepared as it does tend to get cold in the evening hours this time of year. The US Coast Guard will be joining us on Sunday, to find out what everyone is interested in, so come with questions.

There is a Detail leaving for Genesee County Park Saturday afternoon; these 12 cadets and 2 officers will be doing some community service work at the park for the annual 5k run held at the park. These people should also pack accordingly as it will be an overnight out at Genesee county park and I’m asking for all the parents pick up their cadets at the Genesee county park at 1300 on Sunday.

To All Company Commanders, Assistant Company Commanders & all other Petty Officers that hold a billet; you all need to contact all your people due to the fact not everyone receives the newsletter digitally and we need the report for an accurate head count so the galley can prepare accordingly and also to remind everyone we are Running the PRT first thing Saturday morning. Keep in mind there are winter trainings and also our Winter Survival Training and if you do not pass or take the PRT then you will not be able to attend. REMEMBER!!! No one is excused unless it goes up the Chain to your OIC, no one will be excused if this processed is not followed!

I would like to say Bravo Zulu to all those cadets who were recently promoted and to all of you that continually and consistently turn in coursework.

A Glimpse for November drill; 05 November is the Veterans Day Parade & 06 November is the Navy Sabbath. I would like feedback from all the parents as I was thinking of having ALL cadets report directly to the Parade site and have the parents enjoy the parade, then transport their cadets to the NOSC to finish off our drill day.

For Sunday I need a minimum of a 5 person Color Guard to attend the Navy Sabbath at St. Joe’s Cathedral. If any cadet is interested in doing the Color Guard please Contact LT J. Pawli at jpawli@msn.com ASAP. This will be on a first come, first serve basis.

I hope everyone enjoyed their summer. I know it has been a long time since I’ve been on the ships and I am looking forward to being here. We have a lot of work ahead of us this coming drill. Although it may not seem that way with our scorching heat and high humidity, fall is on its way! School has started and we should all be getting back to our regular routines. I know some of you have continued to move on with your coursework and are looking forward to tests and advancement. Others I have not seen any work handed in at all. The summer might be over but it is time to hit the books both at school and here in the cadet program. We need to see cadets advancing; you can only do that with coursework and testing. Let’s get on it. I know there is a backlog of awards and ribbons that need to be handed out. If you think you are in need of something get a chit up your chain and let’s see if we can get those awards out to you. All of you should be looking for new and creative ways to earn new ribbons. Volunteer hours can be accounted for if you get the proper paper work in. Keep looking for new recruits for our unit and to earn a recruiting ribbon.
See you on the ships.

League Cadets

Well cadets, you’ve done it.  You completed your League Basic Bootcamp! Congratulations!  I hope you all left with a new sense of pride and confidence.  You definitely earned it.  I enjoyed hearing all of your stories about your experiences.  From what I was told, you all definitely set a great example of what it means to be a cadet in the Sullivans Division.

Also, BRAVO ZULU to our very own LC3 Rivera, for being chosen as League Honor Cadet at League Bootcamp held here in Buffalo.
