Action Alert – Sullivans Division Sea Cadet Newsletter – May 2018

From The Desk Of The CO

Back to the Ships!

This month we are back at our summer home at the Buffalo Naval Park. These drill weekends we stay overnight on the ships so please make sure you pack a proper sea bag. You are ordered to pack all your uniforms and bring to them to drill. This means I want your Dress Blues, Dress Whites, NWU’s, and all accessories packed. We are doing a complete inventory on what everyone has. You will also be fitted for your Dress whites at this time. (See further in the newsletter for what you will need for your overnight)

Parents, there is a mandatory meeting in the ward room regarding trainings being held at 0800 Saturday morning. This will explain how to request a training and what you need to do! This is very important as training can fill quickly. If your child already sees a training on Homeport please email me the details and I will get them signed on. Instructions on how to do so were handed out last drill and emailed to all parents.

Cadets you will not be able to sign up for ANY TRAININGS TILL YOUR PRT IS COMPLETED! We will be running the mile run first thing in the morning so I can cut orders for trainings. You will also not be able to attend a training unless you have an updated MEDICAL EXAM, this is the one the doctor signs. See further in the newsletter for a complete list of those who need it ASAP. Remember you must attend at least one training per year. Failing to do so can have you removed from the program. I expect everyone to be at drill sharp and ready as we have lots to accomplish!

Change of Command ceremony to be held for LCDR Redford of the Buffalo Naval Operations Center on 30 JUNE 2018, time TBD. We have been invited and if you would like to come please let LT M Pawli know as we need to RSVP for this event. This is being held at the Buffalo NOSC. We will find out the time ASAP and will update you.

**Sea Bag List**

REMEMBER, even if it is not an overnight drill, you are still required to have a sea bag with the necessary contents.

  • Meals are $15 per cadet for Saturday and Sunday lunches. Please make sure you have your Exact change is preferred. Thank you.

On a somber note; LCDR Kenneth Hall passed away 25March2018. LCDR Hall was a very staunch supporter of our program and also our Division. He was also a cadet under the Command of LCDR Charles T. Alaimo. LCDR Hall Served numerous years for our Division starting as the supply officer and working his way up through the Ranks. He is also credited for initiating our national summer training held aboard the USS Little Rock. Towards the end of his career he was still very Active as 031 Empire Assistant Regional Director under LCDR Steve Adams. We will be dedicating this summer training in honor of LCDR Hall and all his
accomplishments. You will be missed Sir!

Fair winds and Following Seas.
Stand easy as we have the Watch.

APRIL IS THE PRT
Hope everyone is ready for the PRT, remember you must pass to attend a training! Also as a reminder it is mandatory that all cadets attend one training a year, failing the PRT or not attending a training can get you terminated from the program.

From The Desk Of The CO

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We have made it through another year and grown stronger in all aspects of our lives. We will continue to strive for the Bergen Trophy and bring it back home where it belongs.

Winter Training is just around the corner; make sure you have all your paperwork and supplies squared away.

I am putting out a challenge to each and every one of you; if we can obtain and sustain 100% attendance from February through April 2018 the prize for all will be amazing. (It will be a function on an off drill weekend) That’s all I’m saying about that. So make sure you talk to all your shipmates and make it happen. So I challenge you to be there and bring a friend.

We have a date for our inspection which will be 04FEB, with a foul weather date of 04MAR 2018. (Remember on Inspection day I expect everyone to be there NO EXCEPTIONS!)

In order to prepare for this we will be doing a dress blues inspection for all cadets. Please wear your NWU’s and bring your dress uniform and be prepared for inspection. This means, a clean pressed uniform, shined shoes, and hair cut with-in regulations or pulled up for females and males must be clean shaven. I have special dollar store razors for those of you who are not clean shaven.

Parents remember you must have valid ID to enter the NOSC.

Please note as of 01 Jan 18 Dues are now $125 per year.

WINTER IS COMING!
With the winter months coming, we will be back at our winter home the NOSC. For all those of you that are new, you need your ID card and it must be current or you may or may not be sent home due to the increased security of the Building.
Also the cold weather brings the need for Coats, Gloves, Hats & Scarfs for everyone; so I want to have all of us pitch in and do our part to donate some gently used items to the Coats for Kids drive. Ask Mom, Dad, Aunts, Uncles or Grandparents if there is anything hanging in the closet that could be donated to this cause.
Winter Training is coming up fast, I know some have expressed interest, so if you are interested send up a CHIT.

From the Desk of the Training and Awards/Ribbons Officer

Good afternoon. There is a chill in the air and the leaves are starting to drop. A sure sign that fall is here. With that brings to mind some things we have to get ready for. One is the move back to our home away from home; Yep, this month we prepare to move off the ships and to the NOSC. I hope everyone is ready to pitch in this month. The second is preparation for the upcoming inspection. There is still time to finish strong but that means we need to have coursework and promotions up to date. I spoke to a lot of you at last drill but I need to remind all of you that I want to have coursework in at every drill. If you want to email me a copy of your coursework ahead of drill you can do so at rryan.usnscc@gmail.com. I will grade it as I get it. No excuses to let coursework hold you up for a promotion. Also make sure you are ready to test. If you are eligible for a test, we want to see you test.

As for the awards and ribbons, I know many of you are wondering why you did not receive the acknowledgement of your summer training as of yet. We have an error in our system and need  to view your ribbon rack. I need you ALL to bring in your ribbon rack, even if you did not attend summer trainings. I want to make sure you are wearing everything you are entitled to wear. I will make an attempt to have every cadet visit me in admin this weekend, hopefully alphabetically, but we will work out whatever system is necessary. Make sure you have your ribbon rack at drill.

Colorguard Recognition

Bravo Zulu to Cadets Fallon, B. Foeller, E. Foeller, Lawson, and Shealy for representing our division at the USS The Sullivans DD-537/DDG-68 Ship Reunion, on 23 SEPT 17 at the Millenium Hotel.  The cadets received much praise and thanks for their Colorguard.  They also had the honor of meeting and speaking with the granddaughter of Albert Leo Sullivan, who was especially moved by the fact that our sea cadet unit here in Buffalo, holds her family in the highest regards.

Also, while these cadets did an outstanding job and stepped up when the request was made for this colorguard, we are still in need of a sharp, core colorguard.  These are cadets who are willing to learn colorguard commands, have excellent military bearing, and can be available on short notice in some cases.

If you are interested, see SN Fallon.

Attention Auxillary and Parents:

We need 2-4 people to handle sending the donation letters and gathering the donations for the Awards Banquet.  If you are willing and able to assist, please call Lt. M Pawli ASAP at 716-892-0769 or mdpawli@msn.com

BZ to SA Rivera who came in first place in his 3 mile heat at the Bone Frog Race ranking 11th place over all out of 216 people! Don’t know what that is Google it or ask a shipmate that was there, everyone had an awesome time helping out such a great cause. Funds raised went to:

The Navy SEAL Foundation who stands behind all U.S. Navy SEALs, Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen, Naval Special Warfare support personnel, and their spouses and children. The Foundation coordinates closely with NSW commands to support critical needs of active-duty operators while also providing resources for NSW veterans. Action Alert – Sullivans Division Sea Cadet Newsletter – September 2017

From The Desk Of The CO

The summer season has flown by! Time to start preparing for INSPECTION!! We only have two more months aboard the ships before we return to our winter home at the NOSC. I want to touch base as you are back in school participating in various activities. I want you to remember even though you play football, swim, are in band etc… We still have an attendance policy. Cadets have been lacking lately in outside functions, especially All Hands Events. We
are no different than your school sports. Our drills are like your practices, our color guards, parades and community service is like your game. We need you there for both, just like your team does, because we are a TEAM. We give some leeway when we can, but in turn we expect the same back. So take a look at the upcoming functions and I hope to see you there. Another issue that is taking place is responding to email requests, it does not matter if you can
or can’t attend a function we need a response. No matter who is making the request you need to respond!

On that note please take note of the upcoming events page!

LT Joseph E Pawli
